Deer back on Diamond Valley council agenda tomorrow

Councillors will revisit the issue after discussing population control measures at a meeting last month.

Concerns about deer continue to stir controversy in Diamond Valley and beyond.

After their meeting on Jan. 17 in which solutions, including a potential cull, were discussed, Town council will once again broach the contentious issue.

Coun. Jonathan Gordon, who put forward the population control discussion at the meeting last month, once again put the deer issue on the agenda for tomorrow's meeting.

The agenda item is a discussion around an email sent to Gordon by Wendy Irwin, a concerned Diamond Valley resident.

"Enforcement has to be initiated," reads Irwin's email. "It does not matter what time of the year it is to have this discussion; they have been urbanized and their numbers are growing and increasing every year.

"On my final note, the evidence is clear, the answer is a cull. (I don’t care what you call it or fluff it up!), we need to manage the population. We are now seeing the evidence as the why… increased sightings of cougar and bear. There is also the threat of waste disease among the deer, which can be passed to others such as moose and elk."

The issue in Diamond Valley and nearby communities like Okotoks has been a controversial one, with many residents advocating in favour of deer population control and many against it

The meeting, which can be attended virtually, will be held tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. The agenda is available here
