A pair of presentations about dementia are planned for Diamond Valley this month.

A support group for caregivers in Diamond Valley is hosting a pair of presentations this month to promote dementia awareness.

The presentations will take place in May and are hosted by Hugs, Love and Understanding. The support group, formerly known as the Diamond Valley Dementia Support Group, has been operating since last January.

Facilitator Loral Luchia said the group is for caregivers of loved ones who have dementia, a disability or other issues.

During the group's May 20 meeting, there will be a presentation called "Dementia Friendly Diamond Valley" from 2 to 4 p.m at the Griffiths Centre in Diamond Valley.

The presentation, by Jennifer Mallamo, will include an overview on dementia, a question-and-answer session and a hands-on aging simulation.

“People will have the experience of what it's like to be aging and get some insight into what people with dementia might experience,” Mallamo said.

Mallamo operates BrainHealthCatalyst, offering training programs and consultations about dementia and brain health.

The presentation also lays the groundwork for holding Memory Cafés in Diamond Valley, in partnership with Wildrose Community Connections, she said.

Mallamo helped bring Memory Cafes to Okotoks, and they are scheduled to start in Diamond Valley in late June.

A second presentation for dementia awareness is scheduled at the Sheep River Library on May 31 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The Alzheimer Society of Calgary will present “Let’s Talk About Dementia.” The talk is for anyone who wants to learn more about Alzheimer's or related dementias.

Several topics will be explored, including treatable factors, reducing risks and what normal age-related memory loss looks like.

Registration is available on the Alzheimer Calgary website

Hugs, Love and Understanding meets on the third Saturday of the month from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Griffiths Centre.

Luchia said her mission is to end the stigma around dementia and the group is a place to talk about things in a safe and confidential environment.

“The support group is there for a caregiver to literally let down their hair,” Luchia said.
