Fire ban in effect in Kananaskis and Calgary Forest Area

A fire ban is in effect for the Calgary Forest Area and other areas in Alberta

A fire ban is in effect for the Calgary Forest Area including provincial parks in Kananaskis Country.

The ban prohibits wood campfires on public land, campgrounds, day use areas and private land. Part of the Calgary Forest Area (CFA) borders Foothills County.

“Under this fire ban all outdoor wood fires are prohibited and existing fire permits are suspended,” states the order.

Wildfire danger in the forest area is high, and the ban will remain in effect until conditions improve.

Anastasia Drummond, a fire information officer for the CFA, said the forecast is calling for warm conditions through the weekend.

"Please be extremely cautious when spending time outdoors,” Drummond said in a notice.

“Avoid activities that could spark a fire and report any signs of a wildfire immediately."

Barbecue charcoal briquettes and fireworks or exploding targets are also prohibited.

There is no fire ban in Foothills County.

A fire restriction remains in place and residents are asked to be extra vigilant when burning during the restriction.

If conditions change, a fire ban can be issued at any time, Foothills County said.
