A horse leads the pack during the 119th annual Millarville Races on July 1, 2024 at the Millarville Racetrack.

A tradition that dates back more than a century returns to the Millarville Racetrack on Canada Day.

The 120th Millarville Races will feature all kinds of activity on track, with Thoroughbred racing complemented by ladies’ sidesaddle, stock horse and pack horse races.

The Thoroughbreds will make their annual July 1 stop in Millarville as the circuit transitions from Lethbridge to Grand Prairie. Attendees will be able to bet on the Thoroughbred races, including the Millarville Derby, through pari-mutuel wagering.

In addition to the action on the track, the day will feature all kinds of activities for the kids, including three-legged, foot and sack races.

There will also be a mini version of the Millarville Farmers' Market, beer gardens with live music and a best dressed competition during the event.

"Our 120th year is a chance to honour the legacy of this community and the volunteers who have kept the spirit of the races alive for over a century," said Paul Ryneveld, race committee chair for the Millarville Racing & Agricultural Society. "It's more than just a race day — it's a homecoming for many Albertans."

The Millarville Races are one of Canada's longest-running rural horse race events.

Since 1905, generations of families have gathered on Canada Day at the Millarville Racetrack to witness memorable races, enjoy homemade pies, and connect with friends and neighbours.

General admission tickets cost $19.05 (12 and under free) in advance or $25 at the gate.

The VIP Experience, which includes lunch in an exclusive tent, is $125 for adults and $25 for children.

Organizers are encouraging people to buy their tickets in advance online (millarvilleracetrack.com/race-track) to save on the cost and to improve traffic flow into the facility located on Highway 549 near the intersection of Highway 22 in Foothills County.

When purchasing tickets online, guests will be able to select arrival times in 30-minute increments.

Gates open at 10 a.m. and the racing gets underway at noon.
