A growing number of older adults who want to live in their own homes face barriers to accessing services they need to live independently, including accessible and affordable transportation. This is especially challenging in rural communities lacking extensive transportation options.

Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) organizations in Diamond Valley, Foothills County, High River and Foothills County are working together to directly address this issue and have launched a pilot program for seniors facing income barriers with limited transportation options.

Funded through the Healthy Aging Alberta initiative, with financial support from the Government of Alberta and United Way, this regional one-year pilot project enhances affordable transportation options for eligible seniors aged 55 and older residing in these communities.

The program is designed to help low-income seniors access medical appointments, social events and community services.

Under the banner of ‘Better Together,’ the pilot project ensures that eligible seniors in these communities have the opportunity to stay connected with family, friends and essential services, ultimately improving their quality of life.

By addressing the transportation challenges that many older adults face, the program aims to foster greater independence and inclusion in local and out-of-town activities.

For additional information about the pilot project or to inquire about eligibility, contact the local FCSS programs.

Program details and eligibility criteria vary by municipality. Residents of each community can contact their local FCSS or foundation for more information on how to participate:
