A sure sign that spring is arriving is when it's time to register for a garden bed at your local community garden.

In Diamond Valley, registration takes place on Saturday, March 1 at the Sheep River Library from 1 to 3 p.m.

The Diamond Valley Community Gardens Society offers two community gardens, both with raised beds to grow your own produce, as well as water, tools and garden amenities, along with a host of other gardeners to draw on their experience and share the volunteer aspect of community gardening.

Whether you are an experienced gardener or new to our Chinook zone, there are many resources within the community garden, including a series of Garden Talks at the Sheep River Library which are free and open to the public.

The next talk is also on Saturday, March 1 at 3 p.m., featuring how to grow mushrooms and wheat grass.

During registration, we will show a short Canadian film by Seeds of Diversity on converting your backyard into a productive kitchen garden.

Jane Toews is the secretary/registrar of the Diamond Valley Community Gardens Society.
