Turner Valley Legion celebrating a pair of milestones

The Turner Valley Legion is celebrating its 95th birthday this weekend and members of the public are invited.

The Turner Valley Legion is celebrating two milestones this weekend and members of the public are invited.

Not only is the branch marking its 95th birthday, it’s also celebrating after its CEBA loan was paid back in full thanks to support from the community.

“We’re celebrating the Legion's 95th year in the community,” said Legion second vice president Kristy Cheesman. “We also want to thank the volunteers and the community for helping us to achieve paying off the CEBA loan."

The celebration is on Jan. 27 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Legion, with cake, light snacks and camaraderie on the menu.

Like many other non-profits across Canada, the Turner Valley Legion got a CEBA loan from the federal government to help it through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Having repaid the loan by the Jan. 18 deadline means a portion has been forgiven.

The Legion worked to trim expenses and save money as the payment deadline approached and said its members, the Ladies Auxiliary, local businesses and the wider community were instrumental in helping repay the loan.

The Legion in Turner Valley was established on Jan. 1, 1929, and paying off the loan means it can continue serving the community, Cheesman said.
