RCMP in Turner Valley want to remind drivers and cyclists to share the road and look out for each other.

Summer months in Alberta provide optimal conditions for people traveling on their bicycles.

Safety tips for cyclists:

• An approved helmet is required for cyclists under the age of 18. Approved helmets meet ANSI, Snell or CSA standards.

• An audible warning device, like a bell, must be used when passing pedestrians on shared-use pathways

• When cycling at night, a bicycle must be equipped with a front headlamp, a red taillamp and a red rear reflector.

• Avoid riding while impaired by drugs or alcohol, as it can inhibit your perception, physical ability and reaction time.

• Always travel at a safe speed and remember to give way to pedestrians.

Unless otherwise posted, bicycles with wheels larger than 50 cm in diameter are not permitted to be operated on sidewalks. If you are riding in a group on a roadway, riding in single-file greatly improves your ability to navigate obstacles and avoid other traffic.

Safety tips for motorists:

• When passing a cyclist or a group of cyclists, give them a reasonable amount of space. Some bylaws mandate 1-1.5m depending on speed.

• Shoulder-check and check your mirrors for approaching cyclists before making turns or lane changes.

• Do not drive impaired or distracted.

• Be patient; your vehicle is much larger and heavier than a bicycle and rider.
