Students find unknown substance near Longview School

An unknown substance, possibly fentanyl, was found in the area of Longview School on April 19.
Turner Valley RCMP are looking for culprits responsible for stealing holiday trailers, ATVs and a pick-up truck in the Black Diamond and Millarville area last week.
Turner Valley RCMP responded to a report of a suspicious substance in the area of Longview School on April 19.

Students at Longview School found a vial containing an unknown substance on April 19.

At about 2:30 p.m., RCMP responded to a complaint that a suspicious vial, possibly containing fentanyl, was discovered in the area of the school.

Turner Valley RCMP S/Sgt Don Racette said students located the vial on the ground and reported it to school staff, who notified police.

RCMP responded and recovered a small vial with a small amount of the substance inside. They say it is unclear what the substance is, but that testing is underway.

“It’s unknown at this point if fentanyl was actually in the vial or not,” Racette said.

The vial is believed to have been there for some time, possibly all winter, he said.

Racette urges people not to touch suspicious items they find on the ground. Instead, he encourages marking the location and notifying police.

The students did the right thing in this case, he said.

Following the discovery, the Foothills School Division sent a note home to parents of Longview School students.

The incident remains under investigation and no further details are available at this time.
