The Okotoks Community Cleanup and tree planting are returning on May 7 for the first time in two years. But, more volunteers are needed to get the job done.

The Town said the goal for the 2022 event is to have enough helping hands to plant 1,200 tree seedlings and tidy up litter from all 20 community cleanup zones.

Volunteers are encouraged to come to Sheep River Park at 9 a.m. on Saturday to participate. Individuals will also receive a cleanup kit and protective gear, like gloves, if they need it. COBS Bakery Okotoks is also supplying morning snacks for the volunteers.

Registration ahead of the event is also encouraged and be done via the Town website. Those who pre-register can also pick-up a kit to clean up the community on a different day or get a head-start on the day of. Kits can be picked up early and year round at the Okotoks Recreation Centre.

Volunteers who have signed up to plant trees are asked to bring their own shovel and gloves, though the Town is prepared to supply those for people that don't.

Tree planting and community cleanup have been annual events in Okotoks for some time, until the pandemic derailed plans for large gatherings. While volunteers still came to the Sheep River valley to collect trash in 2021, the tree planting and barbecue portions were cancelled.
